Welcome!

Understanding horse anatomy and basic care is essential for anyone involved with horses, whether as an owner, rider, or caretaker. Equine Expedition training provides a foundational overview of equine anatomy and offers practical guidance on introductory care to ensure the well-being and comfort of your horse.

Introduction to Horse Anatomy

Horses are large, powerful animals with unique anatomical features that support their strength and agility. Key external parts include the head (with eyes, ears, nostrils, and mouth), pole (neck), withers, back, barrel (body), croup, tail, and four legs that consist of the shoulder, forearm, knee, cannon bone, fetlock, pastern, and hoof. Internally, horses have a complex digestive system, a large heart and lungs for endurance, and strong muscles and bones that allow for swift movement.

Basic Horse Care

Proper horse care begins with daily routines to maintain health and happiness. This includes providing clean water, high-quality feed, and access to shelter. Regular grooming is important to keep the coat clean and to check for injuries or health issues. Hoof care is essential; cleaning and checking hooves daily helps prevent problems like thrush or abscesses. Additionally, horses require routine veterinary care, including vaccinations, dental check-ups, and deworming.

Safety and Handling

Handling horses safely is crucial. Always approach a horse calmly and speak softly to avoid startling it. Lead horses with a halter and lead rope, and avoid standing directly behind them, as horses may kick if surprised. Learning to read equine body language helps prevent accidents and builds trust between horse and handler.
